2012 Porphyria

On her wedding day, Porphyria sneaks out to say goodbye to an old lover. When they meet , the vow 'Till Death Do Us Part', takes on new meaning.

Synopsis:
'Porphyria' is an experimental short film inspired by Robert Brownings poem, 'Porphyria's Lover'. First published in 1836, the poem caused much controversy in Victorian society for it's brutal and shocking murder scene.Told from the lover's side, the speaker vocalises his need to possess and turn Porphyria from subject to an idealistic object. The Lover's belief that the horrendous murder is an act of rationality and love, reflected the patrichal society and subjecation of women in the Victorian era.

This film, though still in a Victorian setting, is a reflection on our society today and the way women are treated and viewed. Porphyria now has a voice, but does it make a difference? Through the use of brute force, this man can justify to himself and society, killing in the name of Love.

Challenging and thought-provoking, Porphyria has played at Cannes Short Corner, Edinburgh Short Film Festival and Fastnet Film Festival, Ireland in 2013.
